EMERGENCY FOOD & SHELTER PROGRAM (EFSP)
What is EFSP?
The Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) is a federal program administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The purpose of the EFSP program is to supplement local efforts of both nonprofit and governmental agencies, to provide emergency food and shelter to people experiencing severe economic crisis, that is not the immediate result of a natural man-made disaster situation.
United Way of North Central New Mexico has been selected as the Secretariat (Administrator) of this program for Bernalillo, Sandoval, Santa Fe, Torrance, and Valencia Counties under the guidance of the local EFSP Board.
Availability of Funds:
EFSP funds are typically available yearly. The amount of funding per county is determined by FEMA for each phase of the program. UWNCNM advertises funding/applications once the National Board notifies UWNCNM regarding the availability of funds. Funding is paid directly to approved agencies from the federal EFSP fund.

Eligibility:
Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must meet the following criteria:
- Be private voluntary non-profits or units of government
- Be eligible to receive Federal funds
- Have an accounting system
- Practice nondiscrimination
- Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs
- If they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board
